Best parks for wheelchairs users in Melbourne
Ben Chew loves to roll in his wheelchair; unfortunately not all parks are well designed for wheelchair users. Here is our list of the ones we've visited that we give our stamp of approval!
Fawkner Park - South Yarra
Fawkner Park, located in South Yarra, remains largely unchanged from its original design of 1875 with formal pathways, avenues and lawns. The park also features Art Deco sporting pavilions, sports fields, and paths lined with Moreton Bay figs, elms, poplars and oaks.
It is a very flat path and runs a loop of 2.4km. There are some sections of the path that have cobblestones but you can avoid them if needed as we know some wheelchairs can't tolerate pebbles.
There are accessible toilets on site, the path is dog friendly and you can register to have events there if you are celebrating a birthday etc.
2. Albert Park Lake
Albert Park Lake is just 3km from the centre of Melbourne. And when you stop to catch your breath, take a moment to enjoy the magnificent views of the city skyline.
There are two paths you can take; one is right next to the lake which can be a bit of a water hazard if you're not well controlled with your chair but it is on a cement path.
The second path is gravel and further from the lake so may be a little safer.
We are going to continue to explore Melbourne and share our wheelchair friendly adventures with you all!
